When talking about Adventure in East Africa, we often talk about the wild. Granted, East Africa has a fascinating wildlife but the region is not short of beautiful cities that offer great adventure. Here, we look at the 11 Most Beautiful Cities in East Africa.

East Africa covers a huge geographical area and has now been expanded to include South Sudan, and Congo. For purposes of this article, I will stick to the original East African countries covering Uganda, Kenta, Tanzania and Rwanda.

East Africa has diverse cultures, landscapes, and histories. These differences have shaped several vibrant and yet distinct cities.

Kigali, Rwanda

I will kick it off with my personal favorite city. Kigali, the capital and largest city of Rwanda, is renowned for its cleanliness. There is little debate about which is the cleanest city in East Africa. Kigali is clean, safe, and has an efficient urban planning.

Despite its tragic history, Kigali has emerged as a thriving city with a burgeoning arts scene, upscale restaurants, and modern infrastructure.

If you are “a party animal“, Kigali may not be your ideal destination. The night life may not be as wild as the rest of the major cities in the region but what it doesn’t offer by night, Kigali does offer in other areas.

Visitors can learn about Rwanda’s history at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. There is also a great adventure at the vibrant Kimironko Market, or you could enjoy panoramic views from the Kigali Convention Centre. Additionally, Kigali serves as a gateway to Rwanda’s natural wonders, including Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Nairobi, Kenya

As the capital and largest city of Kenya, Nairobi serves as the economic, political, and cultural hub for the whole of East Africa. Known as the “Green City in the Sun,” Nairobi offers a blend of urban amenities and natural beauty.

Nairobi has a bustling night life if you want a bit of darkness. Bars like the Alchemist,Beit e selam, Revolver, Attic Rooftop and Mwenda’s pub are just some of the very many nigh spots in Nairobi city.

For the foodies, there are great restaurants you will need to check out. If you love an exotic menu, you might want to try out Thai Chi restaurant. The Sierra Brasserie is also a popular restaurant so is the Talisman Restaurant.

The main highlights include the UNESCO Kasubi Tombs, Uganda Museum, Kabaka’s man-made lake, Namugongo martyrs Shrine and Namirembe Cathedral.

Albeit with a high level of caution, visitors can explore the bustling streets of downtown Kampala, sample local cuisine at restaurants and if you are daring, street food. Jinja is located 85kms East of Kampala city.  Its indeed befitting to call Jinja an adventure capital due to its array of thrilling outdoor activities. The city is strategically located at the banks of both Lake Victoria and the river Nile. This inevitably offers world-class water adventures.

The major highlights include whitewater rafting experiences, kayaking, and bungee jumping at the iconic Nile River Bridge. Visitors can also visit the Source of the Nile, where the river begins its long journey from Lake Victoria to the red sea. While here, you can take a boat cruise to discover the area’s rich biodiversity and scenic beauty.

If you fancy a walk or cultural attractions, a visit to the crafts shops on main street or even the local markets might be worth your evening walk. There are also some old colonial buildings in the town center for your picture and eye pleasure.

Unlike most of the other cities here, this city is quiet and laid-back. The city is  located in the country’s central region. Despite its status as the capital, Dodoma retains a relaxed atmosphere, with wide streets, low-rise buildings, and abundant green spaces.

Visitors here can visit attractions such as the Jamhuri Stadium, Bunge la Tanzania (Tanzanian Parliament), and the iconic Dodoma Cathedral. If you are into Safari, Dodoma’s central location makes it an ideal base for exploring nearby attractions, including the Ruaha and Mikumi National Parks.
